What are Homogeneous tiles?
Homogeneous tiles are porcelain tiles that have a complete body made of porcelain.
Porcelain and ceramic tiles are the two major categories of homogeneous tiles. Ceramic tile is less porous and denser than porcelain tile. Therefore, porcelain tile is much more durable than ceramic tile and can be used both indoors and outdoors. This extra density in porcelain tile can be attributed to a slightly different manufacturing process. Most ceramic tile has a white or red body.
Ceramic tiles are therefore only recommended for interior wall and floor surfaces with minimal foot traffic. On the other hand, porcelain tiles are becoming more and more popular because of their versatility in usage.
Types of Porcelain tiles
While there are many types of porcelain tile but the two most popular ones found in showrooms are full body porcelain or homogeneous tiles and glazed porcelain.
- Full body porcelain or homogeneous tiles – These tiles have a consistent color throughout their entire thickness. When chipped these tiles tile will not reveal a clay base.
- Glazed porcelain tiles – have top surface glazed, may or may not have the same coloration from top to bottom since the top layer is glazed.
The wood tile has become increasingly popular among homeowners because it gives a wood-like finish but has the durability and beauty of a tile. This makes it a brilliant choice for bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchens. Unlike traditional parquet flooring, wood tiles have a lower maintenance requirement and last longer than traditional parquet flooring. They also come in an array of natural wood textures and colors.
Homogeneous Tiles vs
Homogeneous tiles are technically porcelain tiles, but they’re the full-body appearance type. The complete body of these tile has a constant composition of materials. Hence, the tile should be the same color and texture on the front, back, and sides. This would differ from glazed porcelain tiles, which have a thin layer of glaze applied on a white clay porcelain body. Unlike glazed porcelain tiles, homogeneous type rarely suffer from this issue over time for their consistent material throughout their thickness.
When choosing your tiles, you should note that there are two main types of tiles: porcelain and ceramic. Porcelain tiles, as they have a greater density and are less porous, are more suitable for indoor and outdoor use due to their durability. Ceramic tiles, on the other hand, are usually suitable for interior walls and floors, or locations with minimal traffic.
There is usually confusion when discussing the difference between homogeneous and porcelain tiles. These tiles are a type of full-body porcelain tiles, so their colour is consistent throughout the entire material.
Glazed porcelain tiles are another type of porcelain tiles, in which a glazed top surface is covered with a design which can be digitally printed as per your preference. On the other hand, a homogeneous tile cannot be digitally printed with any designs.
If you prefer a more unique and sophisticated design for your house, then you might want to consider glazed porcelain tiles. However, if you are looking for more durable type of tile, make sure to choose homogeneous or full-body porcelain tiles. They are great for any kind of floor tile installation.
